The inaugural Mash Monsters Tournament took place on 27 June 2026 at The Wizards Collection in Rosebank, bringing together over 50 competitors and fighting game fans for a day of competition, community and esports production.
Created by Sibusiso Radebe and supported by The Magic Pixel Academy, the event formed part of the academy’s practical curriculum, where students are challenged to plan and deliver a live tournament under the mentorship of industry veterans Umar and Junayd Bradlow. The academy aims to develop the next generation of South African esports broadcasters, producers and event organisers through hands-on experience.
The tournament featured Tekken 8 and the long-awaited competitive return of Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, making its first appearance on a South African tournament stage in over a decade. Competitors represented organisations including Goliath Gaming, Battle Arena Productions, Illusion Gaming, The Uncertified Geeks, Kombo Party, and more.
In Tekken 8, Carter Mgebisa of Kombo Party completed an incredible three-peat, battling back through the losers bracket to defeat DaXpt in an exciting Grand Final and secure his third consecutive Dojo title.
In Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, Sion909 emerged as the tournament’s first-ever champion after an impressive run, defeating tournament favourite Zero in a dramatic Grand Final reset to claim his first major tournament victory.
Mash Monsters was more than just a competition, it demonstrated the strength of South Africa’s fighting game community and highlighted the value of developing new talent behind the scenes. With the support of the community and The Magic Pixel Academy, the event marks the beginning of what is hoped will become a growing series of community-driven esports tournaments.
